چکیده

Detecting cognitive load (CL) is important for implementing adaptive systems aware of the of such system is to reduce error related risks during task-critical operations or to facilitate computer based (e.g. tutoring systems) learning. Self reports, task performance, behavioral and physiological changes are some of the indicators of CL. However, affective factors which occur naturally in everyday life can influence these variables, making CL detection challenging. In this paper, we investigate machine learning techniques for detecting CL levels from task performance and physiological channels during affective changes with the support of systematic experimental setup. Classification results are presented for detecting two levels (low & high) of CL from individual modalities and their combination using a vote classifier. We have achieved around 66% to 78% accuracy for detecting the two CL levels under affective changes (valence/arousal).

Electroencephalography Based Analysis of Working Memory Load and Affective Valence in an N-back Task with Emotional Stimuli

Most brain-based measures of the electroencephalogram (EEG) are used in highly controlled lab environments and only focus on narrow mental states (e.g., working memory load). However, we assume that outside the lab complex multidimensional mental states are evoked. This could potentially create interference between EEG signatures used for identification of specific mental states. In this study,...

This report summarizes the important research activities, study results and research accomplishments out of the RMCLM project in the past two-year period. The objective of this project includes research of the fundamental issues related to the use of multiple input modalities and their fusion to enable robust and automatic cognitive load measurement (CLM) in the real world. Firstly, we carried ...

Effects of cognitive load on neural and behavioral responses to smoking-cue distractors.

Smoking cessation failures are frequently thought to reflect poor top-down regulatory control over behavior. Previous studies have suggested that smoking cues occupy limited working memory resources, an effect that may contribute to difficulty achieving abstinence. Few studies have evaluated the effects of cognitive load on the ability to actively maintain information in the face of distracting...

P50 sensory gating is related to performance on select tasks of cognitive inhibition.

P50 suppression deficits have been documented in clinical and nonclinical populations, but the behavioral correlates of impaired auditory sensory gating remain poorly understood. In the present study, we examined the relationship between P50 gating and healthy adults' performance on cognitive inhibition tasks. On the basis of load theory (Lavie, Hirst, de Fockert, & Viding, 2004), we predicted ...

COMT genotype influences prefrontal response to emotional distraction.

Early studies of genetic effects on brain activity have been conducted to investigate primarily either the influence of polymorphisms in dopaminergic genes, especially the catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) gene, on prefrontal cognitive processes such as working memory, or that of polymorphisms in the serotonin transporter gene on the amygdala response to threatening stimuli. Here, we address ...
